August, 2019 Member of the Month: Veronica Tellez

Tell us a little about yourself…

I’m just a regular woman working hard to provide for my family, I work for BP as a treasury analyst, I’m a mother of 3 and grandma of 2. I’m actually the youngest of 12 and have older nieces and nephews.

How did you get started in CrossFit?

I came across CF through a facebook ad, I had no clue what CF was … I saw the 6 week challenge and I was ready to make a change, made the appointment and met with Craig gave it a try and loved it.

What are your favorite movements to do during a wod?

I may be crazy for this but I like burpees, I don’t mind them I also like back squats because who else doesn’t want a nice booty … still working on that. I also like the rope, one thing that I got right away not sure how.

What do you love best about CrossFit?

What I love about CF the most is the community, loved the support I got from the existing members when I first started and the friends I got to make … thanks to CF I have made great friendships and looking and feeling better is the cherry on top.

When you’re not in the gym busting your butt, what is your favorite things to do?

When I’m not at the gym and not stuck @ work, you can catch me in a concert or music festivals … I love music, music is therapy to my soul, it either intensifies my feelings or changes my mood.

Tell us something that most people don’t know about yourself?

People might not know this but I have a photographic memory, I know my Drivers License #, banks routing # and all of my kids socials by heart, I can memorize anything with numbers with just one glance … oh and I was photographed by the Chicago Tribune when I was 12 playing pool!

July, 2019 Member of the Month: Joni Augustine

Tell us a little about yourself…

I am married to an amazing man, Brian and I have one amazing son, Branden who is 29. From Texas, we moved here in 2002. I have worked in sales for Hilton for 32 years

How did you get started in CrossFit?

Originally I had some co-workers who did CrossFit and I told them to stop – it was a cult -and to get out – 😂🤣 then my great friend and neighbor kept telling me about it during our marathon training – Arleen Koldolff! Again, eye roll, my thoughts were – what a bunch of crazies – not doing it. Then I wasn’t improving on my runs – I kept going up and down on weight – just not moving – and I saw the ad on Facebook and connected it to Arleen Koldoff – and watched her runs get stronger and remembered all she had told me – I decided to see what it was all about for myself. That day change me forever – for the better. God truly puts what you need before you. It’s not just the physical change but so much growth in so many other areas!! Best decision I ever made!

What are your favorite movements to do during a wod?

Hmmmm – is resting a bad answer? 😂

What do you love best about CrossFit?

Sounds stupid I guess but there isn’t one thing I love the best – it’s everything combined. The faces I see and the good changes being made😀

When you’re not in the gym busting your butt, what is your favorite things to do?

Being with my family, running, movies – I know snoozville answer – sorry

Tell us something that most people don’t know about yourself?

I used to weigh 205 pounds, drank a lot of Jack Daniels, smoked and cussed like a sailor😂 I have not drank or smoked for five years – I have lost 55 lbs and I am feeling stronger at 54 than I have ever felt in my life!! Thank you CrossFit family!!!
P.s. I still cuss – (a little 🤷‍♀️) haha

June, 2019 Member of the Month: Pankaj Singh

Tell us a little about yourself?

Live in Naperville with my wife (Rohini), two kids (Ira and Ishir), and Toby (the fiercest Shih-Tzu). Have been in the area for 17 years. Before moving to Chicago land, spent 6 years at University of Florida (Go Gators!!) pursuing doctoral research. Originally from the eastern part of India and came over to the US for graduate studies.

How did you get started in CrossFit?

Would always pass by CFR but never had the courage (too intimidating!!!). I was running 6 days a week and felt like my fitness level was plateauing. Finally, decided to walk in one day and met Robbie and Craig. They took the time to talk to me and assure me that a skinny runner could do cross-fit. And so I got started with the 6 week challenge in July 2017.

What are your favorite movements to do during a wod?

Everything when the weights are light!!!!. In particular, I seem to have developed a liking for squat cleans.

What do you love best about CrossFit?

The people and the coaches. There is always someone encouraging you and helping you keep going when your mind and body are begging you to quit!. I love the fact that every WOD is different and comes with it’s own challenges.

When you’re not in the gym busting your butt, what is your favorite things to do?

Going on walks with my family, eating out, biking, and shopping for scotch and shoes!

Tell us something that most people don’t know about yourself?

Nothing really. I have no hidden talents.
